Disaster! A Major Motion Picture Ride, which replaced Earthquake-The Big One, opened prior to the holiday tourist season in December to rave reviews. The official grand opening of this new attraction was January 17, 2008.
During the ride/attraction guests watch a projection of Academy Award winning actor Christopher Walken, who portrays a fictional movie director named Frank Kincaid. Walken's projection runs onstage, talks to the audiende, walks in front of and behind real furniture on the stage, and interacts with a live actor in what is being called a high-tech version of a 19th-century magician's trick known in the trade as "Pepper's ghost".
The ride/attraction starts as Kincaid, who is a director of schlock disaster movies, is trying to cast a few "extras" for his next movie. Kincaid explains his movie and what is needed from his "extras" and a few are chosen before moving on to the next room.
In the next room some of the guests who are chosen will participate in several film shoots involving special effects while the rest of the guests look on. From there the rest of the ride/attraction is basically the same as the old Earthquake-The Big One. Guests will still get to experience the subway ride in all its glory.
